Art practice alumni explore their creativity during the month of October with live performances and one’s own exhibit.

Visual Artist Kevin Beasley (‘07) presented his first outdoor live performance “The Sound of Morning” at Performa Biennial 2021 New York City October 14 – 16. The performance was staged at a downtown Manhattan intersection where two distinctly different neighborhoods meet, marking the contrasts inherent to the architecture, inhabitants and histories that have evolved over the years. Beasley inserted his sculptures made up of industrial and utilitarian materials, into existing infrastructure, creating objects that appeared to be interchangeable with existing street furniture. Performers adapted and altered everyday gestures and movements, and using microphones, the noises that faded into the city were enhanced, creating a sonic sculpture live.

Another NYC-based alum made her way back to Detroit to host her own art exhibit.

Detroit-native sculptor and plaster relief artist Lakela Brown (‘05) presented her latest artwork “IMPRESSED” a plaster relief project showcasing historical representations of Black women in a solo exhibition held in Corktown-based art gallery Reyes Finn from September 2 to October 16. Brown posed door-knocker hoop earrings, rope chain necklaces and chicken heads, arranging them in various ways that ranged from meticulously organized to unorganized abstractions frozen in time.
