Kresge Arts in Detroit is pleased to announce the final installment of IN THE AIR: VOICES FROM DETROIT AND BEYOND, a billboard collaboration with the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History at Wayne State University. This month, from April 6 through April 17, the work of Kresge Artist Fellow, Tyanna J. Buie (2019), will be displayed on a billboard at the corner of S. Woodward and E. Canfield, Detroit.
Native to Chicago and Milwaukee, Buie received a BA from Western Illinois University and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work, often deeply personal and political, has been acquired by major institutions and private collections nationally and reviewed by notable arts publications including Hyperallergic and Essay’d.
Discussing her featured artwork, Buie says, “I’m Speaking is a self-portrait deepfake created from GIF and meme culture, which re-imagines pop-culture, identity, appropriation, authorship, and humor through the use of images.”
Buie has attended numerous artist-in-residence programs such as the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, LA; The Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY; and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. She maintains her connection to the community through hosting printmaking workshops and demonstrations as well as participating in Healthy Neighborhood Initiatives-producing public art for underserved neighborhoods in Wisconsin. She currently works as assistant professor and section chair of printmaking at the College for Creative Studies.
Since last September, eight solo-presentations, each one month in duration, have been displayed on the Midtown Detroit billboard. A total of four Kresge Artist Fellows have been included: jessica Care moore (2016), Rashaun Rucker (2019), Darryl DeAngelo Terrell (2019), and now Tyanna J. Buie (2019). The series was designed as an art-driven response to both the social and physical challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic, and the rise of racial violence and injustice nationally. The featured Kresge Artist Fellows each present online artist talks in conjunction with their billboard exhibition.
Buie’s artist talk takes place this Thursday, April 8, from noon to 1PM.
