Michael Stone-Richards Awarded $50,000 Andy Warhol Foundation Grant

Michael Stone-Richards, CCS professor of Critical Theory and Visual Studies, is the recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grants Program for his forthcoming book, Care of the City: Ruination, Abandonment, and Hospitality in Contemporary Practice.

As a 2018 honoree, Stone-Richards joins 20 other writers, who were awarded grants totaling $725,000 for articles, books, blogs and short-form writing that address both general and specialized art audiences. Stone-Richards’ book is the culmination of his own research, as well as courses he developed at CCS, including “Care of the City,” “Waste and Violence” — an examination of bio-politics as the contemporary form of critical theory — and, most recently, “Art and Pedagogy from Socrates to Beuys.”

Care of the City, in which Detroit will serve as one of many case studies, will look at “how post-studio art and visuality use the city to rethink issues of practice, emergency, and abandonment in light of an ethics of care and the conditions of in-hospitability.”

Stone-Richards started CCS’s Critical Theory minor and is the founder and editor of Detroit Research, a contemporary journal of Visual and Critical Studies intended to expand international contexts for Detroit art practices. In 2015, he received a $30,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to help produce the journal, which examines social practice, ceramics, choreography, music, performance and critical theory.
